Facing heavy criticism from all quarters, organisers of the French Open have finally decided to follow Wimbledon’s lead and will award equal prize-money to male and female competitors across the board. It is worth pointing that last year, only the champions at Roland Garros received the same financial reward, but now, from first round to last, the share will be the same, as it is in the other grand-slam events.
Theoretically speaking, this year’s French Open champions will each receive €1,000,000 (about £685,000) - considered the biggest cheque in tennis. On the other hand, Wimbledon announces its prize-money totals on April 24.
This move by French officials closes one chapter in the history of tennis and opens an exciting new one that will positively impact opportunities for women and girls in sport and society.
