Good news for India as International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) has ranked it as the 7th largest steel producer in the world with an overall production of about 44 million tonnes last year.
Replying to a written question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Steel Akhilesh Das said India’s ranking in terms of annual steel production increased from 9th in 2004 to 7th in 2006. He also added that the government is not taking any direct steps to push India’s global ranking but considering the significance of the sector, it is aiming at achieving production level of 110 million tonnes by 2019-20.
Talking about major steel producer in the world, China continued to make his present felt in top of the ladder with 418.8 million tonnes, which was 17.7 percent higher than 355.8 million produced in 2005, followed by Japan (116.2 million), the US (98.5 million), Russia (70.6 million) and South Korea (48.4 million).
