Newcastle United’s dream of lifting the UEFA Cup has come to an end as they lost 2-0 to AZ Alkmaar in Holland, leaving the final aggregate score at 4-4 and knocking them out on the away goals rule. Following the brilliant performance of the first leg at St James’ Park expectations were high for a thrilling finale, but The Magpies failed to deliver and were comprehensively outplayed by attacking AZ.
Before the match, the Dutch side’s formidable home record suggested Newcastle would find life tough, and it turn out to be like that as it took just 14 minutes for Shota Arveladze to break the deadlock. After that Danny Koevermans grabbed the pivotal goal early in the second half, before AZ withstood a tremendous fight from the Newcastle United players in the final stanza of the game to book their place in the quarter-finals.
