
Looks like, today is the day of retirements in the world of sport. After Ireland forward Brennan announcement, there is one more retirement news, this time from the tennis court. Former Israeli number one Anna Smashnova has confirmed she will retire from the sport after this year’s Wimbledon championships.
Theoretically speaking, the 30-year-old won 12 women’s tour titles during her 16-year career. According to Smashnova:
“After Wimbledon I won’t play any more professional tennis. I have completed one life chapter and now it’s time for a new chapter.”
It is worthwhile remembering that the Minsk-born player reached a career-high ranking of 15 in 2003 and has earned over US$2m in prize money. In addition, she won the junior French Open title aged 14 in 1991, a year after emigrating to Israel with her family from Belarus.
Smashnova prefer slow and low clay courts of Paris, where has reached the fourth round of the French Open in 1995 and 1998, as well as winning her first tour title in 1999 at Tashkent.
