Australia has lost five matches in a row but when they started their World Cup campaign against Scotland, it was all back to business. They cruised to a 203-run win in their opening World Cup game in St Kitts. First, Captain Ricky Ponting made a superb century and then bowlers under the supervision of Glenn McGrath demolish Scotland.
Earlier, chasing Australia’s total of 334-6, Scotland could only muster 131, with injured John Blain unable to bat. Colin Smith offered Scotland’s only real resistance, making a half century after his stand of 47 with Dougie Brown had rescued the Scots from 42-5.
After a solid stand between openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting hit 113 for Australia once again showing his dazzling shots all over the ground. Scotland’s bowlers looked like they might restrict Australia to under 300 runs at one point of time but a quick fire 40 from spinner Brad Hogg did the trick for Aussies.
